Skin Signs of Menopause
Menopause, even hearing the word can strike fear in the hearts of any woman approaching that cornerstone in her life. There’s so much written about it, and these days when things are more out in the open than they used to be, there’s more talked about what the signs and implications of menopause can be, and how it affects your appearance – including your skin. That’s right, it doesn’t just play havoc with your emotions, you’re also a possible candidate for being revisited by the adolescent skin care evil of acne! Yes, you can get acne all over again!
One of the signs that perhaps your mood changes are more than PMS can be a change in the condition of your skin, especially if you’re not usually prone to blemishes. Be vigilant in looking out for things such as blackheads because if these are an uncommon occurrence in your skin, they can be a good indication of impending menopause. But this isn’t the only skin issue you’ll deal with, many women experience a dryness or thinning in their genital area.
Your body is probably going to totally rebel against everything you try doing, so try making sure it has plenty of water. Water is the one thing that the body won’t reject and/or use against you! Most people find that their skin tends to dry out. Lotions may help but some women find that their skin has become ultra sensitive and so you could have to try a number of different brands to find one that doesn’t irritate your skin and make it worse. Itchy skin may also become a problem but this could also relate to it being dehydrated – increase your water intake, try hydrating skin creams, avoid soap and if nothing else works, you may need to see your doctor for a special cream to clear this up. Menopausal flushing is another skin issue, this is when reddening of the face or neck occurs – it could be more noticeable to you than it is to anyone else, so just keep your cool and let it recede. Getting flustered will only make it more noticeable to others.
If all of this wasn’t enough, you may have started noticing tiny pieces of skin flaps hanging around your body. They normally occur on eyelids, under arms, upper chest and other areas. These are known as skin tags and are usually harmless. However sometimes they can become irritated and need to be removed by a process of your doctor organizing to have it frozen off or sutured.
Menopause comes in various intensities and until it hits you, you won’t know how much it’s going to affect your body. If you are one of the unlucky ones who does show visible skin signs of menopause, don’t stress about it – it’s one of those life phases that just has to be endured and one day it will pass, and if the symptoms of it get too bad, have a word with your doctor as they may be able to help relieve some of them.
