Beauty, The Dollar And The Knife
While everyone has a view of what they should look like, and many of us are satisfied with that look, an increasing number of people, both men and women, but predominantly women, are undergoing procedures to “correct” what they see as defects to their looks and shapes.
First of all, these fall into two distinct categories, surgical and non surgical, with surgical involving a hospitalized procedure, and non surgical requiring out patient care. Surgical procedures involve the addition or removal of matter, while the non surgical procedures can be as harmless seeming as an injection.
Surgical procedures include rhinoplasty (nose jobs), breast augmentation, lipoplasty (liposuction or ultra sound), skin lifts (such as forehead or cheeks) and many others.
Non surgical procedures include botox injections, chemical peels, dermal abrasions, collagen treatments and many, many others.
Numbers wise, in 2007 females had over six and a half million surgeries combined, with men coming in at less than one million procedures. Of these, about 1.2 million were surgical procedures. This in itself doesn’t really say much about the industry, but when you view that the surgical procedures, although no more than 20% of all procedures done, amounted for over 8 billion dollars in costs, with non surgical trailing at only 4.7 billion, you can see why so many companies want to have a piece of this industry.
So the main question is really do you need that surgery at all? With the number of non invasive products growing, with skin rejuvenating crèmes and natural products coming more into the mainstream market, what price do you really want to pay for your beauty? No matter what the procedure is, no matter how many times it’s been done, there’s still a risk involved, and that’s why you will always sign a waiver for the ‘doctor’ before he operates, whatever the procedure.
